BCCE represents over 600 Classified employees within the Berkeley School District. These members work in nearly 100 different non-management and non-certificated positions:
Clerical staff: Providing essential administrative support, managing records, and facilitating communication.
Special Education Instructional Assistants (SPED IA): Offering crucial direct support to students with special needs, helping them access education and achieve their goals.
Bus Drivers: Ensuring the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities.
Administrative Assistants: Supporting school administrators and department heads with organizational tasks and coordination.
Instructional Assistants: Working directly with teachers to provide classroom support, assist students with learning activities, and manage classroom logistics.
Custodial staff: Maintaining clean, safe, and functional school environments for students and staff.
Nutrition Services personnel: Preparing and serving nutritious meals, contributing to student well-being and readiness to learn.
Maintenance crews: Ensuring the proper functioning and upkeep of school buildings and grounds.
Safety Officers: Contributing to a secure and orderly school environment, ensuring the safety of all individuals on campus.
Instructional Technicians: Facilitating the seamless integration of diverse cultural expertise to enrich the learning experience.
These are just a few positions of so many, that open the doors in the morning close them at
night and secure them 24/7. BCCE members are the bedrock of the Berkeley Unified School District.
BCCE's strength is further amplified by its robust affiliations. BCCE is a proud member of the CFT, a formidable union representing educators and classified professionals across California. CFT encompasses 147 local unions throughout the state and boasts a collective membership exceeding 120,000 individuals. This extensive network provides a powerful platform for advocacy and collective bargaining.
Both BCCE and CFT are integral components of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Founded in 1916, the AFT is a national powerhouse representing a remarkable 1.8 million members across more than 3,000 local affiliates nationwide. This tiered structure of local, state, and national affiliation ensures that BCCE members benefit from a broad base of support, resources, and influence, enabling them to effectively advocate for their rights, working conditions, and the quality of public education in Berkeley.
